At the southern end of the Loire valley, in Mareuil sur Lay (Vendée) to be exact, J. Mourat Father and Son's vineyard covers 67 hectares implanted on the hillsides overhanging the Lay valley.
When visitors arrive in the area of the label of origin « Fiefs Vendéens-Mareuil » they are always struck by the singularity of the landscape compared to the traditional landscapes of the Loire valley.
Here, they do not find the traditional slate roofs nor the caves dug into tufa rock. Vendée is already looking south...
Mareuil landscapes are very warm as they reflect the climatological and geographical privileges of the area, which explains why some call it « Côte de Lumière ». The famous sandy beaches are only a handful of minutes away...
This explains why this area has a long wine-making history...
If Roman legions should be thanked for planting vine in the area, it is the numerous abbeys of the region that shaped the vineyard with all its singular characteristics, in the Middle Ages.
As a result of the encounter of Loire vine and South-Western vine, we find there an exceptionally wide range of types. For hundreds of years, Pinot Noir, Chenin and Cabernet Franc have been growing along with Négrette and Cabernet Sauvignon...
Just like Vendée, Mareuil vineyard is also looking south. Planted on the first foothills of the old Armorican mountain, it overhangs both Lay and Yon valleys. The ocean, only a few miles away, provides the area with exceptional ventilation.
