J. Mourat - PERE & FILS
La Vendée, notre fief...

Mourat Père et Fils

The label of origin « Fief Vendéen Mareuil » is ancien and original. In the Mourat family, passion for this region has been transmitted through generations since 1880...

Since 1970, Jean Mourat has set the first stones of a modern and visionary vineyard although still in harmony with the cultural heritage of Vendée. Since 1999, Jérémie works with him in order to perpetuate this fascinating adventure of the « Great Vineyard » as historian Jean Huget would call it.

The Mourat family loves the land, and looking for the best soils has naturally become the common philosophy.

Mareuil soils are very rich and diverse. Mareuil is implanted on a geological break, right at the crossroads of three different ecosystems, namely: the plain of Luçon, the swamp of the Poitier area and the bocage of Vendée.

There are two main types of rocks: rhyolite and schist.
Rhyolite soils, a magmatic volcano rock (meaning « rock that flows » in Greek), represent the majority in the region. It gives birth to lofty, aromatic wines, with a pleasant mineral connotation.
Schist soils, crimson or light, are consecrated to wines for laying down. They are the soul of our great wines.

Vignes de Mareuil

This quest for the best soils in the label of origin goes along with a meticulous daily work in the vineyard: short trimming, working the earth and thinning out the leaves if needed.

The wine storehouse is recent and modern, the cellars are air conditioned, except for the vaulted cellar of Château Marie du Fou where large walls regulate the temperature perfectly.
Our production would not be what it is if wines were not aged in casks from the area. Therefore casks from the forest of Mervent (Vendée) are exclusively made for our domain...
